Digital transformation in caribbean ports: Insights from Norman Lindo
July 3, 2025 marked a pivotal moment in the Caribbean’s ongoing dialogue around port innovation. The Port Management Association of the Caribbean (PMAC) hosted a powerful installment of its “PMAC Presents” webinar series. The theme: “From Bottlenecks to Breakthroughs – How Digital Transformation Can Make or Break Your Port.”
The session was moderated by Tsahai Morgan, Communications and Marketing Executive at ADVANTUM. The keynote speaker was Norman Lindo, a trailblazer in Caribbean port technology. He is also the former Vice President and Special Advisor for IT at the Port Authority of Jamaica (PAJ).

Leadership Rooted in Real-World Experience
With over 30 years in maritime digitalisation, Norman Lindo brought a wealth of knowledge to the session. He combined technical expertise with strategic vision for the region’s digital future.
His leadership roles at APM Terminals, Kingston Terminal Operators, and KCT Services Ltd. earned him recognition. He advanced container tracking, EDI integration, and port automation.
His presentation reflected both hands-on experience and a clear passion for transforming outdated systems into modern, tech-enabled ports.
The Montego Bay Port: A Model for Modernisation
The story of Montego Bay, one of Jamaica’s busiest ports serving both cargo and cruise sectors, showcased a prime example of successful digital transformation. The Port Authority of Jamaica owns the port, while Port Handlers Limited (PHL) manages its daily operations. As Morgan explained during the discussion with Mr. Lindo, the port once relied heavily on manual systems, spreadsheets, calculators, and paper-based documentation, which created inefficiencies and limited competitiveness.
To address these issues, PAJ launched a comprehensive digital transformation initiative aimed at modernising Montego Bay’s infrastructure. This effort was driven by ADVANTUM’s port management software, and Lindo played a central role in guiding the transition. His leadership led to the successful implementation of a cloud-based Terminal Operating System (TOS), a move that greatly improved operational efficiency, cargo visibility, and data-driven decision-making.
Addressing the Core Challenges
Lindo used the webinar to confront the realities many Caribbean ports continue to face. He noted that outdated processes, sluggish workflows, and substandard service levels, when compared to global benchmarks, remain key barriers to growth.
“This is the genesis of most port operations not being up to par,” Lindo stated, reinforcing the importance of investing in transformative technologies to remain competitive.
The Urgency of Digital Adoption
Beyond identifying problems, the PMAC webinar served as a strategic guidepost for port authorities, terminal operators, and maritime stakeholders. The message was unmistakable: embracing digital transformation is no longer optional, it’s urgent.
Lindo’s career exemplifies how visionary leadership combined with the right technology can elevate a port from inefficiency to excellence. His message echoed throughout the session, a rallying call for Caribbean ports to eliminate bottlenecks and embrace a future-ready digital ecosystem.
